Training and development

How we invest in our people

Hackney Council is committed to investing in its staff and the Mayor has made a commitment to ensuring that services remain in-sourced where possible. Our HackIT manifesto commits us to ‘learning more’ and we provide people the time and opportunities to do this.

Every team member can use PluralSight which provides online training courses to support particular technical expertise. There are considerable opportunities to learn ‘on the job’. Many of our projects involve colleagues being partnered with experts from digital agencies or peers from other organisations to deliver an outcome.

Each quarter, all line managers have the opportunity to explore a core skill in detail as part of their learning and development. The management team identify training needs for the service and leads workshops and training sessions to support development. Examples of recent events include ‘how to design and deliver an effective workshop’, ‘recharges and why they matter’ and ‘An introduction to our money and your responsibilities’.

We also like learning from other organisations. Recent events include:

  • A training course from the Samaritans to help us listen with empathy
  • A dragon’s den with the private equity company Hambro Perks
  • Empathy and listening skills with Graeae Theatre company

We support teams to learn more from experts in their sector. For example:

  • Developers worked with AWS to review the architecture of their APIs
  • Information Management contribute to the cross-government community on GSuite
  • Digital design learnt from the National Centre for Social Research
  • The infrastructure team contributed to the National Cyber-security Centre advice on networks

We also support individuals with their learning. For example, two members of the data and insight team have participated in the GDS Data Science Academy which includes access to a mentor in central government.

And of course our apprenctices are on a two-year programme combining learning in the workplace with their courses at College.
